Yesterday, we stumbled upon a Boy Scout troop holding a bicycle safety clinic in the parking lot of Owings Gymnasium at Our Lady of Grace (OLG) Church. The young bike riders were clearly having a great time while honing their riding skills.

The scene reminded us that a church community is about so much more than those who gather for services in the sanctuary. Its reach can extend into the broader community. Active outreach, both locally and beyond, helps meet social, emotional, and material needs. The New Testament offers many examples of Jesus reaching out to people in public spaces. It is heartening to see churches continuing that work today.

Our Lady of Grace Church is located at 2203 West Market Street in Greensboro. The church itself was built as an act of love. Local insurance executive Julian Price built OLG in 1943 as a memorial to his wife. Although Mr. Price was a Baptist, his wife was a devoted Catholic.

Seeing the church community engaged in outreach today would have warmed the hearts of both Mr. and Mrs. Price had they been here to see it.
