Downtown Skyline

Today’s view of the skyline, featuring the Lincoln Financial Group building (formerly Jefferson Pilot and Jefferson Standard), was taken from the parking lot of the new Piggly Wiggly at the corner of Florida Street and Freeman Mill Road. If you’ve ever lived in the mountains, Greensboro can seem very flat. However, this view reminds us that the city does have some changes in elevation. Once the leaves fall, downtown will be even more visible from this vantage point.

A fence currently runs along this section of Florida Street because the redevelopment replacing Smith Homes has yet to begin. The approximately 45-acre site will be developed by the Greensboro Housing Authority and will include a mix of income-based and mixed-income housing. Plans call for a variety of housing options, including multifamily apartments, senior housing units, cottages, and more. The development, known as The Arbors at South Crossing, will offer residents a lovely view, along with the convenience of walking across the street to shop for groceries at the new Piggly Wiggly—a welcome amenity for the community.
