Today’s photo features a tobacco field on Burlington Road (also East Wendover and Highway 70). North Carolina remains the top tobacco-producing state in the USA. There are two tobacco fields along the road inside Guilford County. According to the US Census of Agriculture, Guilford County ranks 32nd with respect to tobacco production in the state.* Tobacco remains a lucrative crop for the county. The above fields are the closest we’ve seen to Greensboro. A sign on one of the tobacco fields advertises 100 acres for sale.

f you want to see the North Carolina of yesteryear, pick a road and drive from Greensboro to Burlington. The county is changing before our eyes. Growing tobacco is hard work, and using tobacco is hard on the body. However, if you’ve ever worked tobacco—or heard the tales of a family member who did—you know there are some great stories to tell.
