Yesterday morning, David M. Spear spoke at the Forum at New Garden Friends. We first heard him speak and featured him on Greensboro Daily Photo four years ago. See the our post to read a detailed story about his life and career (HERE).

In the above photo, Mr. Spear is holding one of his photos of Mamie, the matriarch of the Neugent family. She and her family are the subject of the book, entitled “The Neugents,” a publication that brought Mr. Spears quite a bit of recognition and helped launch his career as a photographer. Yesterday, he shared some of the techniques he used during the analog, film photography years, reminding the audience of how difficult it was to accomplish the same results on duplicate prints. By his 2013 book on Cuba, “Ten Days in Havana,” he was using a cell phone; still capturing expressive and insightful portraits. His current photo lab is entirely digital, relying on photoshop and other technology for editing. While he doesn’t have any immediate plans for a photography project, he does plan to continue learning Spanish. ¡Buena suerte, Señor Spear!
