Time for a little fauna! We found this wolf spider hanging out in an outbuilding in Greensboro. As seen in the photo, they carry their egg sacs with them for the 1-3 weeks it takes for them to hatch. Wolf spiders are quite common in North Carolina. Males live for about a year and females for 2-3 years. They are natural pest controllers and keep energy moving through the food chain.
These spiders are not dangerous. They are not agressive, but will bite if trapped or handled. Fall is primary mating season for spiders and so you will start noticing more. Try to take measures like caulking windows and keeping windows and baseboards clean and avoid getting them in your house, so you won’t have to be temped to trample them.
Happy Saturday!
