This fawn is actually a twin, but one had already moved on by the time we had a chance to photograpg. From 3-4 months of age, fawns lose their spots when they grow their winter coats. The above fawn looks pretty mature, yet still has very clear spots; so likely it was born in May.

Greensboro is dense with deer. As wood and grasslands get clear-cut for housing, the deer encroach more and more on suburban neighborhoods. According to this NC Wildlife White-tailed Deer Density chart, Greensboro/Guiford County is at the top level of deer density. Local Greensboro residents range on a continuum from those who love to feed the deer to those who love to hunt them. If you are in this latter category, make sure you follow the rules for the NC Central Region (see HERE). While we neither feed or hunt them, we do shoo them away when they hop the 5’fence to our to graze. To be sure, they are here to stay.
