
Happy February First! This is a big day in Greensboro’s history. The name of this street, February 1 Place, is derived from the historic start of the sit-ins that began on 2/1/1960 in the Woolworth’s building to the right. Four N.C. A&T students, “The Greensboro Four,” began a peaceful protest by having a seat at the counter and insisting on being served a cup of coffee. This brave act contributed significantly to the efforts to bring about deseggregation nationally.
Fast forward a few decades: Woolworth’s now houses the International Civil Rights Center with a display of the lunch counter where the historic event took place. If you look to the right and see a pedestal. On top is one of eight unique bronze sculptures in Greensboro. They are all cups of coffee, symbolizing the significant action of The Greensboro Four. . Out of the four college freshmen– Jibreel Khazan, Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond, only Jibreel Khazan is still living.
