Veterans Day began as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1938, it became a holiday to honor WWI veterans. In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day, and designated it as a holiday to honor all veterans.

Yesterday, we shared information about Maplewood Cemetery and today’s photo features the Veterans section there. When we were there on Sunday, the only grave we saw already decorated with flags was that of Oscar Julius Harden (1931- 1977). Mr. Harden served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a Gunnery Sergeant– a senior enlisted advisor for operations. It appears Maplewood does not have a Veterans Day service, but they do hold a Memorial Day service.

In 2021 on Greensboro Daily Photo, we featured Tech Sergeant Albert Lochra (see HERE). He died in 2023 at the age of 97 (see obituary HERE). For Mr. Harden, Mr. Lochra, and all the other veterans living and deceased, thank you for your service.
