Remembering President Carter

As per national tradition, federal offices were closed since it was the day of President Carter’s funeral.  Flags are still in the half-mast position. The above photo was taken at the Greensboro Veteran’s Memorial, located downtown in the spot where Church St., Lindsay Street, and Summit Avenue converge. Specifically, the address is 301 North Church Street. The memorial honors fallen veterans who have died in battles since World War II. It was dedicated on November 10, 2014.*

President Carter won the 1976 election in North Carolina and many people remember him fondly. President Carter’s term was from 1977-1981. In 1978, he visited Wake Forest University in Winston Salem to speak on his National Defense Policy. That is the only record we could find of his visiting the Triad during his presidency. While there aren’t specific formal connections to Greensboro and President Carter, we’re betting there are many personal ones, and if not for political reasons, likely for spiritual and humanitarian reasons.
