Latham Park: Summer Fun

Yesterday was sunny with a high of 86º and humidity was at 65% and there wasn’t any wind. Those weather conditions make it feel more like summer. The above photo was taken at the skate park at Latham Park, off of Wendover Avenue. It shows a skater heading back into the bowl to finish up a move as another skater watches. The skate ramps were busy yesterday, as was all of Latham Park. People were walking, riding their bikes, playing with their dogs, and playing tennis. All of the tennis courts were full. The baseball field, however, was quiet.  It is so nice seeing people using our public spaces. Latham Park was named for James E Latham who was a cotton importer and exporter in Greensboro. He and his wife lived in Greensboro going from Fisher Park, to Irving Park, and back to Fisher Park. The Lathams donated 70 acres along Buffalo Creek which is where the park is today (read Jim Schlosser’s article HERE). Wendover, splits the park.

Parks bring people together and do wonders for physical and mental health. Greensboro’s Parks and Recreation Department is wonderful. Our cities parks and programs help people make memories right here in the community.  Are you using them? We hope so.

Happy Thursday!
