Since Friday is the Holy Day for Muslims, today, we’re featuring the Islamic Center on 16th Street. It is located near the Wal-Mart and Sportsplex off of Cone Boulevard. Last Sunday, the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) held an Interfaith tour to different houses of worship in Greensboro, and the Islamic Center was one of the stops. The session was very informative and people of all different ethnicities and religious backgrounds were welcomed into the mosque. It was a beautiful learn about Islam, a religion practiced by twenty three percent of the world’s population. 

Usually, everyone sits on the carpet in a mosque; however, for last Sunday’s session, chairs were brought in for people who might have difficulty with mobility. The Islamic Center of Greensboro was formed in March of 1994, with its original location on Murrow Boulevard and only four people in attendance for Friday prayer. Today, there are 450 Muslims per week participating in services and it is not the only mosque in the area. This growth in attendance is one of many examples of how Greensboro has become increasingly diverse over the last twenty years.
