K is for Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme is a global doughnut company that was started in Winston-Salem in 1937. Founder, Vernon Rudolph, bought the original doughnut recipe from a chef in New Orleans. Rudolph chose Winston-Salem because his favorite cigarettes, Camels, were headquartered there. The company has quite an interesting history, with ups and downs, and interesting facts like doughnuts made with North Carolina’s own Cheerwine soda.

Krispy Kreme has been in Greensboro for several years now. Since 2010, the above store, located on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro, provides a delivery service to local businesses. That sounds like a service with tremendous potential. As of 2015, Krispy Kreme had 1,000 stores and, continues to be comfort food to many of its customers. They have even developed new ovens so that the “Hot Now” neon sign can be lit longer. Doughnuts are like sushi, every second counts with respect to freshness.

Today, for ABC Wednesday, for our A-Z Urban Finds series, K is for Krispy Kreme. As far as we can tell, the Battleground Store is the closest to downtown Greensboro.
