Veterans Day

Greensboro’s super patriotic house on Holden Road, across from Starmount Country Club, treated our community to a Veterans Day remembrance. The plywood cutout represents the Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima. On February 23, 1945, Joe Rosenthal took a photograph of five US marines and a Navy hospital corpsman raising a U.S. flag atop Mt. Suribachi in Japan. The Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington, D.C. was sculpted from the photo. The above plywood piece was carved with the image in mind.

We hope that yesterday, and everyday, you remembered our veterans. Wherever you live, whatever you believe, veterans are people who have taken an oath to defend the people of their country. We thank the family on Holden Road for providing Greensboro with a tangible reminder for every virtually every holiday. Here’s to Remembrance Day that commemorates the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front on “the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.”
