Driving along South Mendenhall at Spring Garden Street, you will find College Hill’s newest coffee shop, The People’s Perk.  Above, co-owner Nancy agreed to sit for a photo on a break between serving customers. Behind her is a work of art by UNCG art student, Allison Daniel. Allison’s painting depicts the outside view of the coffee shop. The People’s Perk is really supportive of local artists.

The shop is spacious and looks like an expanded version of someone’s living room. There is plenty of room to spread out, play board games, talk, enjoy great coffee, play wi-fi, and peruse the selection of local art and pottery for sale. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet co-owner, Karen, but we have the feeling she’s as friendly and outgoing as Nancy. Both owners left the corporate/non-profit world to realize their dream of opening a coffee shop and building a sense of community. College Hill/Tate Street now has three local coffee shops: Tate Street Coffee, Coffeology, and People’s Perk (in order of opening). Be sure to visit all three. They are all three well worth your time and each with a unique personality!
