The above photo is a west-facing scene of the Nathanael Greene statue at Holliday Circle and McGee Street. It looks deceptively rural, when in reality, it is a city scene in the heart of downtown. Greene was a major general in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War in the 1700’s. He fought in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15th 1781. Greene was born in Rhode Island and died in Georgia However, for his time he fought in North Carolina, Greensboro remembers him fondly; so much so that we named our city after him. Greenville, SC and Greenville TN are also named for him.
