“What would make Greensboro a healthy city?” paints the little boy on the wall on the Lindsay Street side of the edible school yard at the Greensboro Children’s Museum. As fast as the boy on the left can paint the question, in Wordle format, the boy in the middle paints cloud-like responses: people, living wages, acceptance, water, accessibility, heart, play…….
This wall began with a series of curbside conversations when people passing by were asked “What would make Greensboro a healthy city?” Muralist Kathleen Kennedy translated the common themes that emerged from the public responses into a 40-ft. mural. Judy Baca’s “Great Wall of Los Angeles” inspired this project. (reference). Close to forty people contributed between $10-$100 to surpass the $2,000 funding needs to make this wall a reality. This is a great example of people coming together to make something wonderful for our city.
Downtown Greensboro is starting to get some great, painted walls (here, here, here, and here). If you like public murals, you will not regret taking the time to visit those four “here” click-throughs! If you get a chance, head to the Children’s Museum to see the wall for yourself. We were only able to fit about 1/3 of it in this photo. It continues for several more feet!
