Yesterday, we featured a part of Randleman Road that is holding on to old-time ways. Today, we see a mailbox that evokes memories of yesteryear. It is located on Immanuel Road near Hunter Elementary School. In North Carolina, we like colorful mailboxes and like to grow clematis vines on them. While you see the rusting, green country mailbox in the foreground, in the background, the city, highway signs of Merritt Drive are slowly choking out the rural feel of this part of town. However, we can’t drive past 3438 without wanting to stop and share a glass of iced tea and reminisce with the owners. Is your personal style represented in your mailbox? Like Greensboro’s landscape, the US Postal Service is undergoing changes. If we’re reading the data correctly, revenue is down in fiscal year 2011 (here). Perhaps that reflects the increase in electronic communication. However, in North Carolina, what’s gone is not forgotten. The North Carolina State Archives has a postal history project available online! No stamp necessary– yet.
