Our city’s namesake Nathanael Greene is assembling his troops at the round-a-bout downtown on McGee Street. In less than 24 hours, the 230th reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse will be in full swing. For one brief weekend, General Greene will step off his pedestal and come to life. In the American Revolutionary War, Greene was a major general for the Continental Army. The big battle in our area happened on March 15, 1781. Although Cornwallis beat Greene at the battle, it was a turning point in the war. Presently, the battlefield is soaked; however, Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be sunny. Let’s hope so because wet wool is neither comfortable nor aromatic! If you are local, you have a great opportunity to interact with history! If you are driving down Battleground and hear gun shots, don’t panic!
