Happy First Day of School

Today is the first day of school for the traditional schools in Guilford County. For commuters, this means allowing extra time due to increased traffic, and for reduced speed limits in school zones. Some schools have students who bicycle to school, especially the Grimsley, Kiser, Sternberger complex at the corner of Josephine Boyd and Benjamin Parkway.

The above photo features students with their families and staff at what was once Washington Elementary School, named for George Washington Carver. Now, it is the Doris Henderson Newcomers School, named for the still-professionally-involved Doris Henderson. The photo is published in black and white; standard for 1915, the year the school first opened.

Here’s to a safe and enriching school year. Let’s all do what we can to support public schools. They are a big part of the foundation on which strong nations are built. If you have a student in your life, try to get a first day (or at least first week) of school. Children grow up fast!

Happy First Day of School!
