Every year or so, we like to showcase Nathanael Greene, the American Revolutionary War hero for whom Greensboro was named. He fought in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781 and Greensboro became a city twenty-seven years later in 1808. There is a whole history lesson encapsulated in this 10-ft. bronze statue. It was created by local sculptor James Barnhill.*
The statue is located on West McGee, at the roundabout named for former mayor Keith Holliday. Mr. Holliday is still serving the City of Greensboro as Development Associate for Downtown Greensboro.
The statue, located off of South Elm and slightly west of Hamburger Square, is eternally on guard, watching over the city. The fact that the sky was overcast on the day the photo was taken adds to the somber mood of the scene.
Happy Tuesday!
