The above photo was taken at Saturday’s Block Party for the Doris Henderson Newcomers School on East Washington Street. The school first opened in Nocho Park in 1915 as the first school in Greensboro to serve Black children. It has undergone several curriculur changes over its 111 year history.
The above photo features the Block Party held this past Saturday as the gets ready to reopen as the Doris Henderson Newcomers School of Greensboro. Students new to English will study here for one year in preparation for their transition to their attendance zone school– or other choice school. Initially, the newcomers program was housed in the building that was formerly Guilford Primary, located in northwest Greensboro. The school’s new location, just east of downtown Greensboro, will make access to downtown resources so much easier.
The Block Party was a chance for students to meet their teachers and for the community to learn more about the school. A heartfelt thank you to all the teachers who came out on Saturday afternoon!
