Happy first day of June! Yesterday, we featured a bluebird; today, we feature a night creature that competes with bluebirds for insects: The Bat. The above bat box is at Price Park; placed there to provide a habitat for these flying mammals. Bats are common in Greensboro and we are home to several species: Big Brown Bats, Evening Bats, and tree roosting bats like the Eastern Red and Hoary Bats are found here. May-July is maternity seasons for bats. If you find them in your attic, seek professional help to remove them humanely and to ensure that the flightless pups have a chance for survival.
These insectivores earn their keep in insect removal without pesticides and are part of nature’s check and balance system. With the urbanization of Guilford County, we need to figure out ways for humans and the local flauna and flora to co-exist. A bat box in a local park where the land is not at risk of being clearcut is one such solution. Here’s to supporting our local parks, fauna and flora in any way we can. Happy June!
