This must be the season for downtown churches to get work done. Last Sunday, we featured the “wrapped” First Presbyterian Church. This Sunday, we’re featuring Saint Benedict Catholic Church is located at the corner of Smith Street and North Elm, less than ablock away from First Presbyterian. If you look behind the orange cones on the left, it looks like there is some work being done on the mortar. Established in the 1870s, this was the first Catholic Church in Greensboro. The above Gothic Revival building dates to 1899.
According to online sources, the original exterior of the above structure was a wooden structure and the brick veneer was added in 1918. St. Benedict’s used to have a Catholic school, but it merged with St. Pius X. St. Benedict’s has a history of embracing integration. If you ever have the opportunity, attend a service or event there so you can see the beautiful interior and meet the lovely members.
Happy Sunday!
