Spring Open House at the Weatherspoon

Last night was such a glorious evening at the Weatherspoon Art Museum on the UNCG campus. The museum held their open house, which was free and open to the public. It was an intergenerational event with Dr.Sharbreon Plummer (left) and Precious Lovell. Both were both very involved with current exhibits in the Weatherspoon. Quilts Scholar Dr. Plummer curated the exhibit “Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South.”

Precious Lovell created the exhibit dedicated to Black quiltmaker Harriet Powers. This immersive room features levels of artifacts related to Powers life and the experience of enslaved Blacks in the 19th century. The bottom level of the altar-totem-tree of life represents the Atlantic Ocean and artifacts from the voyage and what the enslaved brought with them and who brought them here. The top level is joyful and represents the power words and the celebratory aspect of the installation. Seats were filled during the Conversation of the Spirits and the conversations continued upstairs in the exhibits. The evening was a fine example of the value added component of having institutions of higher education in the community. Head over and see the exhibits when you get a chance.

Happy Friday!
