Precious D. Lovell: Harriet’s Powers Exhibit

This exhibit at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery is so inspiring. This multi-sensory exhibit has music and sound playing and there is just so much to see. The exhibit is inspired by the work of Harriet Powers, a mid-19th century quiltmaker. Contemporary artist Precious Lovell brought this exhibit to life. *

In the collection, there is a Bible with most of the references to FREEDOM, equality, and liberty were left out, because enslaved people weren’t free. That is a powerful throught. That heavily-redacted Bible was published in 1807. It retained references to obedience, telling slaves to obey their masters. The exhibit is on the second floor of the museum, located at 1005 Spring Garden Street.
