Turtle Time

Yesterday, the above turtle came sauntering across our lawn at 12:45 pm. We cannot conclusively identify it. The turtle was easily able to retract into its carapace (shell), that was about 8″ in length. If it was a box turtle, that would have been the upper range in length. We watched it travel. It was moving fairly quickly. We kept our distance and it seemed to know where it was going.

We thought we’d use this opportunity to remind everyone that turtles have a relatively small range of habitat. They don’t do well if they are moved, and some species can stretch their necks much longer than you might suspect. If is best to leave them alone. They know where they are going. The only thing you might want to do is try to ensure they don’t get hit by a car. Warm sunny days bring them out and warm pavement or a sunny trail can feel really good to them. With as dry as it has been in Greensboro, they are likely out looking for a source of water. At any rate, we love documenting all signs of nature seen in our yard. We hope you are doing the same.

Happy Monday!
