Firehouse Grocery; Formerly Old Station 5

, ,

Well readers, this week is shaping up to be history week. Today’s photo of FireHouse Grocery has an interesting history. The building, located at 549 South Mendenhall Street, was formerly 547 South Mendenhall Street. It was built c1897 to serve as the West End Hose Company. It remained Greensboro’s volunteer West End Hose Company originally originally housed a horse-drawn hose wagon. The building presently serves as a grocery store. It closed as a fire station in 1919 and Station 5 was moved to 442 South Mendenhall.

We were excited to uncover a very useful website called “Greensboro Former and Historic Firehouses,” see HERE. It is one-stop-shopping for getting the history and seeing photos of all of Greensboro’s historic firehouses. Spend some time on that site if firehouses are an area of interest for you. Also, stop by FireHouse Grocery and buy a few things and have a look inside. You will be helping a local business and soaking in a little part of Greensboro’s history. Venture onto Spring Garden Street and have a look at some of the other businesses.

Happy Friday!
