Hellebore Time

We thought you’d enjoy a little color today. This was a hellebore we saw out on our walk, just before the snow arrived. Hellebores are hardy, long-lived perennials and they thrive in Greensboro’s Zone 7b/8a. They are highly cold and drought tolerant, and even resistent to deer (our favorite). With the snow and ice, ours are hidden, but they’ll be back once the ground is no longer covered. They love bright morning sun and protection from the harsh afternoon sun. So, the tend to grow best on the north and east side of trees.

One of the best places to find them in Greensboro is Gethsemane Gardens and Nursery at 3703 NC Highway 150. They often sell at the Greensboro Curb Market. If you want something that blooms in winter, hellebores are a great option. Be careful, if ingested, they are poisonous to humans, dogs, cats, and horses. Fortunately, our dog has never expressed an interest in them.

Happy Thursday!
