MLK Statue

/

To round out this historic week with the “Walk for Peace” and the Dr. Martin Luther King holiday, we’re sharing this bust of Dr. King, located in historic the Old Asheboro neighborhood of Greensboro. You may remember that initially it was located on South Elm Street. The cement bust was made by Wilbur Lee Mapp in 1994. It was recreated in durable bronze by local sculptor Jim Gallucci and unveiled in the present location in 2019.

As we were taking this photo of it during the MLK Parade on Monday, a young boy looked up and said, “It says something on the back, too,” at which point we walked around to the other side. The inscription reads, “Hatred confuses life, love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life, and love illumes it.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

These are really good words for us to remember and so fitting with the monks’ uplifting beliefs. Let us remember to love.

Happy Friday!
