Solar Panels Installed at UNCG

Last week, solar panels were installed on the 1510 Walker Avenue building on the campus of UNCG. Formerly, this building opened in 1992 as the University’s recreation center. The 90,000 sq. ft. building served as the rec. center for over 20 years. In 2016, due to increased enrollment, the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, located on Gate City Boulevard, replaced the above building.

1510 Walker Avenue lives on as classroom space for the Middle College at UNCG, a health and life sciences focused school. It is one of the choice programs for Guilford County Schools. Before retiring from the Middle College last year, science teacher Tomas Hefner wrote and was award a grant to get the panels purchased and installed. Not only will the solar panels offer electricity cost savings, they will reduce environmental impact. As an environmentalist, Mr. Hefner is proud to have that be part of his legacy at the Middle College. The teachers at the school will have the opportunity to create cross-curricular lessons related to the solar energy at their building. The students will have an opportunity to learn first-hand about solar energy!

Happy Tuesday!
