Built in 1928, Lindley Elementary School has been demolished and a new school will be built in its place. This came with much controversy and discussion. The new facility will cost 76 million dollars and to renovate the old would have been 94 million (read more HERE). According to this Fox 8 YouTube video, the new school will be three stories high, will have four playgrounds, and will retain some bricks from the former building.
D.A Everett Construction from Raleigh and the Christman Company in Greensboro are working together on the construction project. The school is named after John Van Mons Lindley who was an early nurseryman and a pomologist (a specialist studying and cultivating fruits and nuts). Mr. Lindley owned over 900 acres in Greensboro and, with his nursery business, played a key role in keeping Greensboro Green. He died 10 years before the school was built. The Lindley Park/Sunset Hills neighbors, and the Lindley students and their teachers are watching this progress with great interest.
Let’s hope there in landscaping that would make Mr. Lindley proud.
Happy Monday, the first day school is back in session after winter break!
