Little Free Libraries

Greensboro has some fabulous Little Free Libraries and the one above is show-stoppingly wonderful. The Martha Taylor “Buttercup” McGuirk Memorial Free Library is located on the edge of Irving Park at the corner of North Elm Street and West Newlyn Street. The library has quality books, especially for children and young teens. In addition to free books, it has “& more.” On the day we were there, the “& more” was mistletoe and two new, easily-portable tubes of colored pencils.

Martha Taylor “Buttercup” McGuirk lived in Morganton, NC, where she died in 2021 at the age of 90. Her granddaughter lives in Greensboro, so, we’re betting she is the “librarian.” Her grandmother studied elementary education at UNC-Chapel Hill and had a lifelong interest in local history, so this memorial library would probably delight her.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we shared the books we have read and we took books from little free libraries, only to resonate them when we have finished reading them. Reading physical books is experiencing a resurgence. May we all be part of that trend. Do you have a favorite free little library?

Happy Saturday!
