Today, you have an alternative to shopping at the big box retail stores. You can stop by the Really, Really Free Market in Glenwood and drop off items that you no longer need and leave with items that you could use. You don’t have to bring items to take them and nobody counts what you take. We do suggest bringing some reusable tote bags, possibly some extras for those who need one. The location is 1312 Glenwood Avenue and the hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There are also community workshops and a recipe swap.
Glenwood is said to be the most diverse neighborhood in North Carolina. Literally, there are people from all walks of life who call Glenwood home. Most of the homes are 2 bedroom, one bath and there aren’t any McMansions. What the neighborhood does have is two community centers, The Glenwood Recreation Center, Glenwood Together meeting space, a community newspaper (Hey Glenwood), a branch of the Greensboro public library, a brand new elementary school (Peck), a K-8 private Christian academy (HOPE), outdoor food pantries, little free library boxes, and neighbors who look out for each other. It is so fitting that they are hosting the Really, Really Free Market. They could always use a little help setting up, closing up, taking leftover items to a donation center, and your presence.
The Really, Really Free Market began in 2003 with simultaneous markets in Miami, FL and Raleigh, NC. They are not managed by any organization and people are encouraged to host them, anytime, anywhere. Greensboro just happens to have one on Black Friday to encourage people to save their money to spend on Small Business Saturday. Once you see how happy people are to receive the items at the Really, Really Free Market, you will get hooked. We’ve even seen people hand an item to someone else who seemed to want/need it more.
Happy Friday!
