This past week, the above chair was at the curb of DeSoto Place waiting to be relocated or collected. DeSoto Place is located right across the street from Grimsley High School in the Lake Daniel neighborhood. While we were noticing this chair that stood out like a photo prop against the backdrop of autumn leaves, we noticed something else. This section of DeSoto Place is also named “Marty Sheets Way.”

Marty Sheets was an accomplished special Olympian who was a lifelong resident of DeSoto Place. Marty was an accomplished swimmer, weight lifter, skier, tennis player, and golfer. In 1968, he won a gold medal at the first Special Olympics (read more HERE). Marty died in 2015 at the age of 62, and this street designation came three years later. So, that white chair at the curb was the impetus for our coming home and researching what, for us, was a very inspiring story of a life well lived. After all, it is the people who make Greensboro so great. Marty, we wish we’d known you and featured you in life.
