As written on the above marker, Maplewood Cemetery was established in 1918 to provide burial space for African Americans in Greensboro. Maplewood replaced Union Cemetery, located just south of Gate City Boulevard at South Elm and East Whittington St. Union Cemetery was established in 1882 and closed for new burials in 1917 ; however, it remains an active historic site on the National Register of Historic Places.
While Union Cemetery only has 97 grave markers, Maplewood has 1,097 graves just in the Veterans section alone. In all, Maplewood spans 26 acres and is located on Bingham Street, just off West Market.
If history in east Greensboro and cemeteries is of interest to you, read this 2012 Greensboro Daily Photo post about Proximity Cemetery. While we haven’t been back there in over 13 years, we’re wondering if there has been any community support for this little plot of history. We’re feeling blessed that our old posts relocated to this WordPress site; otherwise, we might have forgotten about Proximity.
Happy Monday!
