We love the way the Nathanael Greene statue faces downtown, as if keeping watch over the city. Created by Sculptor James Barnhill, it was dedicated on March 26, 2008, celebrating Greensboro’s bicentennial. The base is granite and the statue itself is bronze. The 22′ statue is located in the center of a roundabout between West McGee and Greene Streets. The roundabout is on a section of road, known as Keith Holliday Traffic Circle.
Nathanael Greene was an American military officer who served the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He led the American forces against the British at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. While the Continental Army lost the battle, the British Army was weakened and ultimately lost the war. Between the general, the sculptor, and the former mayor, for whom the traffic circle is named, there is quite a concentration of history, honoring three great people with deep connections to Greensboro. Be sure to notice this sculpture next time you are downtown.
Happy Friday!
