The above “yard sale” took place on Saturday. Actually, it was a “sell everything that isn’t nailed down” sale. Fordham’s was sold and the new owner of the business could not make a go of it. The former owner, Lindsay helped the building owner clear out the space. All clothes were 50 cents. The vintage fire extinguisher was sold for $5. Someone bought the large plastic bins on wheels that formerly wheeled dirty clothes to their respective cleaning area. A few dollars here, a few there, and by the afternoon, much had been sold. We didn’t ask about the price of wedding dresses, but they were beautiful. All of the clothing that hadn’t been picked up had to go.
It seems like Covid, the trend to dress casually and wear “wash and wear clothing” have taken a toll on the dry cleaning business nationwide. Society is changing in so many ways, especially the above little corner of Chapman and Spring Garden Street. Freeman’s Grocery became David Sheppard Instruments, which is now Freeman’s Grill and Pub. And then there is the Wine Tasking that still has an IHOP roof; Bianca’s Italian Restaurant is long gone from that corner. It will be interesting to monitor the transition of 1900 Spring Garden Street. What will Fordham’s become?
Happy Monday musings!
