The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer is located at 901 Friendly Avenue, just across the street from North Carolina A&T University and the new construction on the lot owned by the United House of Prayer. The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer is the only African American Episcopal Church in Greensboro. The first Church of the Redeemer building was built in 1910. The church has a very rich history and fortunately, it is well documented online.* Originally, the small congregation met on the campus of North Carolina A&T University, which, at the time was called, The Agricultural and Technical College for the Colored Race.
The brick building with the steep, triangular roof and the iconic red doors, make the church readily identifiable from a distance. Since the Middle-Ages, red doors have signified a place of sanctuary. It is also said that, in the Episcopal Church, they once signified that the mortgage was fully paid. Regardless, if you are looking for and Episcopal church near downtown, give this one a try.
Happy Sunday!
