Urban exploring can be so much fun. Yesterday, we were exploring the Holden Road area and, at the corner of Walker Avenue and just behind Lindley Park Baptist Church, this little log building was spotted, just glowing in the sun. It was the chinking shining in the sun that made the building noticeable from the road. The chinking appears to be made from red clay and other earthy materials. The sign over the door reads, Van P. McClellan, Jr. BSA Hut- Troop 144.
We were convinced that a google search of the name Van P. McClellan, Jr. would provide details about his being a scout troop leader, eagle scout, or someone very involved with Boy Scouts. Instead, the first thing that comes up is from the U.S. Patent Office. On Nov. 6, 1967, Van P. McClellan, Jr. of 608 Scott Avenue filed for a patent for the invention of a mop head.* If you know someone from Troop 144 please ask them how the building got its name. It is hard to believe that this beautiful little log cabin has stood the test of time and that it is hidden in plain view!
