October opens with a photo of the vultures roosting on the tower at the corner of Old Horse Pen Creek Road and 220 North Battleground. Right behind the CVS, on the northeast corner of the intersection, the tower is full of vultures. On the east coast, vultures are expanding their range and they have moved here by the dozens. Vultures can be a nuisance, but they are part of the ecosystem, devouring animals that get killed on the road. Vultures are social, monogamous, and maintain strong social bonds throughout their lives. Basically, while they loom above Battleground, waiting for their next meal, they are having a good time enjoying each other’s company.
We learned that in flight, a group of vultures is a kettle; resting, they are a committee; when devouring a carcass, they are wake. When we were there, the committee was settled in for the night. Have you noticed them anywhere else in Greensboro?
