
General Nathanel Greene stands stoically in the middle of the round-about at South Greene and West McGee Streets.The 22-ft tall statue of Greene on a 10-foot pedestal used to tower over cars and pedestrians at this intersection. The sculpture, by James Barnhill and in place since 2008 is about to share the block with a Hampton Inn. It is as if he is monitoring progress on the construction of the Hampton Inn and Suites being built.
Yesterday, workers were getting a lot done, taking advantage of the warm, dry weather. The 6-story hotel will add 120 more rooms for lodging downtown. On this corner, the 18th and 21st centuries will live together peacefully. Fortunately, fabulous sunsets will still be visible to the west of General Greene.
