As gardens are winding down in Greensboro, wildlife seems to be abundant. The above photo features a pickerel frog hiding on a hosa leaf. The Piedmont is a key habitat for the pickerel frog. They have skin secretions that are toxic to many of their predators*; however, they perform a very important service in your garden, eating all of those mosquitoes, gnats, and bothersome flies. If you have them in your garden, it probably means that you have a water source not too far away.
If you don’t have frogs near your home, consider hiking around Country Park or on one of the many trails and greenways. Be the first in your group, keep your eyes open, and you will find some interesting flora and fauna!
