The S.H. Kress Building is an iconic building in downtown Greensboro. The Kress Company was a five and dime store that believed in selling inexpensive items in elegant buildings. This building at 212 South Elm Street is, indeed, elegant, especially the rooftop renovation. It is interesting to know that when Kress opened in the 1930s, the air was conditioned by an ice/salt mixture that was pumped through the building during the day. The building also played a significant role in the Civil Rights movement in Greensboro.*

On an otherwise quiet day downtown, earlier in the summer, a man happened to walk by with his dog. The duo adds so much energy and warmth to a photo of what otherwise seems like an empty building downtown. While the building has the space to add retail or residential square footage, don’t be fooled, there is a lot happening here.
