Driving back from the Liberty Antiques Festival a couple of weeks ago, we ran across this abandoned gas station on Martin Luther King Drive at I-40 and Highway 421. In spite of being closed, with no signs of being converted to anything, the building has a beauty to it. The blue and white lines, the geometric shapes, beg to be converted into a mid-century modern house or retail space. With all of those windows, hand-blown glass would come alive in that building. Unfortunately, having been a gas station, the property probably comes with extensive environmental hazards to address.
The building is located on the easternmost edge of Gillespie Park, a part of town with its own school, golf course, curb market, and more. Surely, someone can come along and repurpose this space. It is just a couple of miles from Southside and downtown Greensboro. Seems like prime retail space- just look at the greenery behind it.
