This weekend, on an urban walk along Spring Garden Street, the above plants were spotted near Spring Garden Street on Holliday Drive, just behind Spring Garden Bakery. They are the same plant, but at very different stages of growth. The purple one is drying up, the yellowish one is younger. They reminded us of the juvenile non-fiction book, written in 1991, by Cheltenham (PA)  Elementary School. The book about culture, diversity, and individuality is aptly titled, “We Are All Alike We Are All Different. It reminds us of the importance of embracing diversity. 

Last night, a candlelight vigil was held in Greensboro to mourn the violence in Charlottesville and to stand in solidarity for social justice. Look at how much prettier this photo is with the two flowers being completely different colors. They are alike; they are different- just like us.

Each year, Greensboro becomes increasingly diverse. The website of the City of Greensboro has the following population data: White 44.2%, Black 41.1, Hispanic 7.8, Asian 4.0, and the other categories making up a few percent* Working together, embracing differences, and treating each other with dignity, will be what it takes to thrive in the 21st century. These are serious times.
