Five Hearths

We had trouble figuring out how to format this post, so, we’re sharing them all in this giant format. They are best appreciated when seen together. These sculptures appear in front of the Jim Melvin Municipal Center downtown on Washington Street. They are a series of five cast glass and concrete works, resembling headstones, located just off the sidewalk. They were created in 2016 by artists Crystal Schenk and Shelby Davis. The sculptures reflect moments of individuals working working together as community, doing things we can all celebrate and be proud of. As people walk to the municipal building, they see this homage to the diversity of Greensboro and how individuals come together to make community.

See the exact explanation in the plaque below. The installation is a gift of the Cemala Foundation. If you are local, we encourage you to head downtown and see them for yourself. As with all good sculpture pieces, seeing them installed in three dimensions is much more impactful than looking at photos. Although, you don’t have to squat to get a good look through our photos! Happy Tuesday, dear readers.
