J. Douglas Gaylon Depot was originally built in 1927 and was known as the Greensboro Southern Railway Depot. The remnants of the original Southern Railway Depot can still be seen on South Elm Street. However, the above station is located on East Washington Street. While Southern Railway gave up service in 1979, the station was reopened to the public in 2005. At present, Amtrak trains use the station, as do Greensboro and intercity busses.* The above mural, being admired by three visitors, features the railway’s service area from back in the 1920s.

Today is ABC Wednesday and for our A-Z Alphabet “S” entry, “S” is for Southern. We love the “SR” at the railway station reminding us that “The Southern serves the south.”  We also like the one with patina on the manhole cover just down the street from the train station. If you haven’t visited this station, it is worth stopping by to enjoy this piece of Greensboro’s transportation history.
