Downtown Night Shot

Leaving the Garrison Keillor show at the Carolina Theatre Thursday night, we were struck by the beauty of the Greene Street Parking Deck. It is located just north of the Carolina Theatre and across West Washington Street from the Biltmore Hotel. The 706-space deck, built in 1972, is very convenient to mid-town venues. The visible lighted discs, added more recently, bring a touch of color to the otherwise-cement-gray deck. When originally built, the deck reflected a minimalist style, sometimes referred to as Brutalist. Local architect J. Hyatt Hammond was trying to mirror the cement plaza across the street.* The applied, colorful disks temper the austere facade. The addition of the pink lights add even more color to the scene. Behind the deck, the historic Lincoln Financial Building looms large, anchoring the scene in Greensboro.

The October theme for the City Daily Photo Community is “abandoned.” In the above photo, the buildings aren’t exactly abandoned, but they do take on an aura of solitude and loneliness as people are going home for the note. We are proud to share scenes from Greensboro with the City Daily Photo Community around the world.

Have a great weekend. It promises to be a busy one.
