Persimmon Festival

This is a scene from the Colfax Persimmon Festival last year. This Saturday, the 8th festival will be held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The festival is part demonstration of old time ways, as seen in the photo above, and part getting out and enjoying a Guilford County autumn. Likely, brunswick stew will be served up in a cauldron, as will chicken soup. If this year is like previous years, persimmon pudding, muffins, and pulp, will be offered and will probably sell out within the hour. Extracting persimmon pulp from a domestic persimmon is a process of removing about 50% peel and seeds to get the 50% pulp. The whole process is messy and sticky, but as for the pulp, there is nothing like it!

The only challenging part of the day is parking. There is parking at Shady Grove Church, west of the festival, and a shuttle is provided (for a suggested donation). The festival itself it $7 and, once inside you will want money for food. However, the day is more about enjoying the old time ways than a profit motive. We’re hoping the same vendors, old-time musicians, and re-enactors will be returning. They were great.  Here is a link to the festival.
