Yesterday afternoon turned cold and blustery in Greensboro and so our tour of Bennett College was abbreviated. Bennett College was founded in 1873 by Albion W. Tourgee as a school to educated emancipated slaves. In 1926, it became a college for African-American females. Current enrollment is just under 800 students. Bennett College has a rich history and it played a significant role in the civil rights movement in Greensboro.
The above photo features Pfeiffer Chapel. The chapel was built in 1941 and is located on the northern end of the campus. It was named for the Canadian-American philanthropist Annie Merner Pfeiffer, who was awarded an honorary degree from Bennett College in 1941- the same year the chapel was built. From commencement services to church services to campus meetings, Pfeiffer Chapel is a hub of activity. Yesterday, however, seemed to be a quiet day on campus. Hopefully, the co-eds, known as Bennett Belles, were enjoying special Valentine’s Day activities. It has been just over six years since we featured the chapel (see here). It was good to be back on campus.
Happy Sunday, dear readers!
